Virginia Educators Back Terry McAuliffe as Next Governor of Virginia

Terry McAuliffe has received the recommendation of the VEA Fund for Children and Public Education to be the next Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

“We believe that Terry McAuliffe is the leader our students, educators, and public schools need to aid our recovery from the pandemic and significantly boost the prospects of all Virginia students,” said Dr. James J. Fedderman, VEA President and chair of the VEA Fund. “He has a history of major investments in students, is focused on moving us to educational equity, supports the full funding of Virginia’s Standards of Quality, and is committed to raising teacher pay to above the national average.”

McAuliffe’s education platform includes much-needed additional support for students in the form of more school counselors; an increased focus on recruiting and retaining a more diverse force of educators; a huge boost to the Virginia Preschool Initiative; wider access to broadband Internet services; and a growing investment in career and technical education.

“Terry McAuliffe is the best education choice for Virginia’s next governor,” said Fedderman, “and we will work as hard as we can to see that he is again elected to that office.”

McAuliffe’s term as governor from 2014-2018 included a $1 billion increase in school funding, and his current K-12 education platform addresses key needs to move public schools forward. Republican nominee Glen Younkin’s campaign website scarcely mentions public schools and contains no plan.

The Fund is the political action committee of the Virginia Education Association and is comprised of and led by state public school educators. It is funded by voluntary donations. All major candidates for the Governor’s race were offered the opportunity to participate in the VEA Fund’s process.
